Carmen Fire and Fate

In an one woman tour-de-force, Kirstin Chávez IS Carmen. She has sung the role throughout the world and now takes us through Carmen's journey from her own unique perspective, in a complete vocal and physical embodiment of this timeless character.

Through Carmen's reflections on the passions that drove her, the men who desired her, the fierce
determination that burned within her and the jealousy that destroyed her, Kirstin explores the enigma at the heart of Carmen and reveals why the fascination with her continues.

This new production is specially devised by Kirstin Chávez in collaboration with Artistic Director Johnathon Pape. Kirstin delivers Bizet's timeless music in her seductive mezzo and also tells Carmen's story through the language of flamenco, choreographed by the Buenos Aires-born flamenco dancer Sol Koeraus, "La Argentinita". Also drawing on her Spanish heritage Kirstin Chávez is the ultimate Carmen.

Kirstin will sing in the original French with the monologue in English (and also in Spanish at The Cervantes Theatre).

"
American mezzo Kirstin Chávez is the Carmen of a lifetime. With her dark, generous mezzo, earthy eroticism, volcanic spontaneity and smoldering charisma, Chávez has it all, including a superb command of French and a sense of humor. And she can dance, too. Chávez's performance went beyond opera, beyond music, to that rare place where theater and truth meet."
